We've gathered some of the best places to visit to introduce kids to the rich history and heritage of Essex, offering plenty of fun and educational experiences for the whole family to enjoy. With something for all budgets, your next day trip is waiting to be discovered.

Step back in time at Colchester Castle

Let's start with one of Essex's most iconic landmarks, Colchester Castle, the largest Norman Keep in Europe. Here, kids can step back in time and imagine what life was like in the medieval era. They can climb to the top of the castle and take in panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Inside, the interactive exhibits bring the history of Colchester to life, ensuring that kids are not just learning but actively engaged in the experience. Kids can even build a castle wall with giant foam blocks and try role-playing! Check out their calendar for events to get more out of your visit. Entrance fees apply. Colchester residents may be entitled to discounted entry, please check the museum website.

Follow in the Romans' footsteps

For those interested in Roman history, the ancient town of Colchester is a must-visit. Known as Camulodunum to the Romans, Colchester was once the capital of Roman Britain and is home to some of the country’s best-preserved Roman walls; it’s where Boudica famously fought and won. Walk along the ancient walls, visit the remains of the Roman theatre, and stop for lunch in the town at one of the many family-friendly eateries. If you have young children and need to keep them entertained while you take a well-earned break, we recommend The Romano Lounge, which we have always found very child-friendly.

For families looking for free activities for kids in Colchester to learn about history and heritage, try Colchester Natural History Museum, which is small but well worth a visit. Also, check out Hollytrees Museum inside Colchester Castle Park; this museum has multiple floors with hands-on exhibits for kids, all at no charge.

Explore constable country at Dedham Vale

Not far from Colchester is the picturesque village of Dedham, which inspired the famous artist John Constable. Kids can explore Constable Country and learn about the artist's life and work before taking a boat trip along the River Stour to see the landscapes that inspired his paintings. Dedham Vale is also perfect for family walks, with trails that meander through stunning countryside, offering opportunities to spot wildlife and enjoy a picnic by the river.

Hadleigh Castle, Essex's own piece of history

Perched on a hill with stunning views over the Thames Estuary, Hadleigh Castle is a fantastic place for kids to explore. The ruins of this once-grand medieval castle offer plenty of space for imaginative play and picnics. Nearby, Hadleigh Country Park provides a variety of outdoor activities, including cycling, walking trails, and a playground, making it a great day out for the whole family. Entrance to the castle is FREE, parking can be found nearby at the Salvation Army Rare Breeds Centre.

Audley End House and Gardens

For a taste of grandeur, visit Audley End House and Gardens, a magnificent Jacobean mansion set in beautiful parkland. Visitors can explore the opulent rooms of the house, play in the sprawling gardens, and even meet soldiers in costume at their event on Saturday, August 24, through Monday, August 26, 2024. Entrance fees start at £12.70 for children and £14.00 for adults. Please check Audley End's website for details.
