It is the time of year to take in some beautiful, vibrant scenery in the many woodlands throughout Essex, get out of the house, make the most of the warm-ish weather, and explore somewhere new before the cooler weather arrives. Hanningfield Nature Reserve is just a short 15-minute drive from Chelmsford; for sat-nav, use the Discovery Centre's postcode, CM11 1WT.

The beautiful reservoir meets woodland trails laced with vibrant colours all year. Essex Wildlife Trust, in partnership with Essex & Suffolk Water, manages the reservoir, which is free to visit, but they accept donations toward the upkeep of this fantastic place.

The nature reserve has its free car park on-site, although it can get busy at peak times. It’s only a short walk through the car park to the entrance. Your adventure starts at the discovery centre, where you can pick up a trail guide to help you get around (although there’s lots of signage), read all about the nature reserve and learn some fun facts, or pick up a refreshment or grab some lunch before you begin your walk. On your way in, its hard not to spot the yellow caravan, which is actually Mr Toad's caravan, there's not much in there but it makes for a cute photo opportunity.

Wind and the Willows sculpture trail, a children's favourite

Follow the Wind & The Willows sculpture trail through the woodland paths starting at the discovery centre, where you can see charming wood sculptures of Mr. Toad, Mole, Mr. Badger and Weasels from the classic children's novel. Each sculpture also has a brass rubbing, so children can take home pictures to remember the day. This is an excellent way of introducing books and bringing the characters to life for children who may not be into reading. It's a fun and educational experience that will surely leave a lasting impression.

The trails are pram-friendly, although it does get slightly muddy in wet conditions. When wet, wearing walking boots or wellies is a good idea. The paths are flat and great for a stroll; walking to the furthest point and back only takes about 70 minutes with young children. Along the walk, take in the fantastic views of the reservoir from the water's edge; once you reach the furthest point, the “fishing lodge”, you can grab some refreshments in the Cafe on The Water and take in more of the beautiful views inside the restaurant or on the outside decking area if the weather allows. If you’re looking for more to explore, behind the cafe entrance and car park, you’ll find a small play park with swings, a slide and climbing frames - the park has something for all ages. Unlike the trails, though, there’s no shade in the park, so it’s a good idea to pack sun hats on a hot day!

The nature reserve is bursting with wildlife and is an area of particular scientific interest with unusual birds, swans and ducks. Bring your binoculars, as there are lots of opportunities to spot wildlife in the bird hides running along the edge of the water overlooking the reservoir.

Hanningfield Nature Reserve and Reservoir offer a fun, low-cost outdoor autumn adventure in a beautiful setting for all ages and abilities. If you’d like to add another fun element to your visit, children can collect as many different types and colours of leaves or flowers they can find, bring them home, dry them out and use them in some seasonal crafts at home.
