Expect sand, sea & smiles!
If you’re looking for a simple, stress-free family day out by the sea, Walton-on-the-Naze ticks all the right boxes. This charming Essex seaside town offers the kind of classic British beach day that kids (and grown-ups) remember fondly – sandy toes, sticky ice cream fingers, and the sound of arcade coins clinking away.

The star of the show: Walton-on-the-naze pier
You can’t miss the pier – it’s one of the longest in the country and stretches right out into the North Sea. It’s not just a lovely walk, though; the pier is also packed with fun. There’s a brilliant little amusement area that’s perfect for younger kids, with rides like mini dodgems, gentle tea cups, and even trampolines.
If you’re planning to stay for a few hours, the £10 wristbands are well worth it – they cover unlimited rides for the day, so your little ones can spin and bounce to their heart’s content without you constantly reaching for change. The wristbands are available from the little booth near the rides – just check ahead for opening times if you’re heading down midweek or out of season.

Soft sand & tide time tips
The beach itself is a real winner – it’s wide, sandy, and ideal for digging, paddling, and castle-building. At low tide, there’s loads of space to spread out and explore the shoreline. Just make sure to check the tide times before you go, as the sea does come right in and can cover most of the beach during high tide. You can find up-to-date tide times online – it’s a small thing, but it really helps plan the day, especially if you’ve got a buggy or lots of beach gear to lug around.
There are some handy steps down to the beach from the promenade, and a few sloped access points too, although they can be a bit steep or uneven in places. If you’re visiting with a pram or someone with limited mobility, the central section of the promenade near the pier is your best bet for easier access.
Ice cream & extras
A trip to the seaside wouldn’t be complete without an ice cream stop, and luckily, there’s a cracking little ice cream parlour right near the pier entrance. They do proper scoops (not just the soft serve stuff) with loads of classic and more adventurous flavours – the honeycomb and raspberry ripple are favourites in our house.
There are also a few family-friendly cafes and chip shops nearby if you’re after something more substantial, and plenty of benches and spots along the front where you can perch with a picnic.
Arcades & rainy day back-ups
Should the weather take a turn (this is England, after all), the pier’s indoor arcade offers a good bit of shelter and entertainment. It’s got all the usual suspects – 2p machines, claw grabbers, air hockey – and it’s a decent way to spend an hour if clouds roll in. There’s also a small indoor play area tucked away near the back.
Getting there & parking
Walton is easily reachable by train, with the station just a short walk from the seafront. If you’re driving, there are a few car parks close to the beach – the Station Yard car park is one of the larger ones, but it can fill up quickly on sunny weekends, so it’s worth arriving earlier in the day if you can.
Toilets (including baby changing facilities) are located along the promenade and near the pier, and there are public bins dotted around to keep things tidy.
Why it’s worth the trip
Walton-on-the-Naze might not have the glitz of bigger resort towns, but that’s part of its charm. It’s laid-back, welcoming, and has just the right mix of nostalgia and fun to keep the whole family happy. Whether you’re there for a full day of sun and sea, or just fancy a wander with some chips and a cone, it’s a seaside gem that’s easy to love.
Looks amazing!
