Families looking for something a little different this May can head to Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome, where a series of events will bring history, vintage vehicles and aviation to life across the early summer season.
Set in the Essex countryside between Chelmsford and Maldon, the historic aerodrome — once used to help defend Britain during the First World War — is hosting several family-friendly events designed to get visitors exploring, learning and enjoying the outdoors.
The first event, the World War One Living History Weekend on 2–3 May, gives visitors the chance to meet living historians in authentic uniform, discover what life was like for Royal Flying Corps personnel, and explore real aircraft hangars and exhibition spaces. Families can watch historical demonstrations, hear fascinating stories from the era and see history brought to life in an interactive and engaging way.
Visitors will also be able to meet aviation historian Kelsey Ellington, also known as The Flying Historian, alongside a number of specialist living history groups recreating scenes from the First World War.
Later in the month, the new Stow Maries Motorbike Show arrives on 16 May, with vintage and modern motorbikes displayed throughout the aerodrome grounds, alongside stalls, food and entertainment.

One of the biggest events of the season follows on 24 May with Wings and Wheels — a hugely popular day combining classic cars, historic aircraft and family activities. Visitors can enjoy flight line walks, museum access, exhibitions, stalls and outdoor food while watching vintage aircraft take to the skies (weather permitting).
The site has also introduced new family-friendly pricing for 2026, with children aged 0–10 now visiting free during standard admission days.
For families with children interested in planes, vehicles, history or hands-on experiences, it will make for a memorable day out this spring!
