After a short winter closure, Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome reopens its gates on Friday 13 February, just in time for a half-term visit with the children. And for 2026, there’s even better news for families — visiting this remarkable World War One site is now more affordable than ever.

For the first time, all children under 11 can enter for free, making a big difference for families with more than one primary-school-aged child. Adult tickets and concessions have also been frozen for 2026, meaning a full family day out won’t come with a hefty price tag.

History that brings learning to life

Set in the Essex countryside, Stow Maries is the best-preserved World War One aerodrome in Europe — and it’s far more than just a museum. The site supports Key Stage 1 and 2 learning across subjects including history, science, and design and technology, all in a way that feels hands-on and engaging rather than classroom-based.

Ian Flint, Chief Executive Officer, explains:

“Our new pricing structure for 2026 makes the Museum much more affordable for families — and at a time when price rises have impacted almost every area of life, we’re delighted to be able to offer even better value to our visitors.”

Free child entry — all year round

Free entry for accompanied children aged 0–10 is available on all non-event opening days throughout the year, as well as during many of the Museum’s popular “added value” events. These include family nature days, living history weekends and fly-ins, all included within standard pricing.

New for 2026 is the Stow Maries Motorbike Show on Saturday 16 May, alongside returning favourites such as Armed Forces Day: Back to WW2 on Saturday 27 June. Larger air events, including Wings and Wheels (Sunday 24 May) and The Stow Maries Air Show (Sunday 16 August), are also back — with separate ticketing details available online.

A peaceful new event for nature lovers

One of the most exciting additions to the 2026 calendar is Dawn Patrol, a brand-new early-morning experience designed for nature lovers. Taking place on Sundays 12 & 26 April and 10 May, this small-group event offers guided access to wildlife areas not usually open to the public.

Led by the aerodrome’s wildlife experts, visitors can enjoy the sounds and sights of birds and animals as the site wakes up — followed by a well-earned breakfast in The Airmen’s Mess café. Booking is essential.

Plan your visit

Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome is usually open Friday to Sunday, 10am–4pm, with private bookings available on other days. Whether you’re looking for a half-term activity, a learning-rich family day out, or a peaceful morning immersed in nature, 2026 is shaping up to be a brilliant year to visit.
