Tucked away within Poplar Nurseries garden centre in Marks Tey, Poplar Miniature Railway is a little gem that's perfect for a family day out. Whether you're popping in for a browse or making a special trip, the miniature railway is well worth adding to your visit – especially if you've got little train enthusiasts in tow.

All aboard! The train ride lasts around three minutes, taking you on a gentle loop through the garden centre's grounds. It's just long enough to feel like a proper little adventure without testing anyone's patience. Along the way, you'll spot a few animal statues dotted around the track – the giraffe was definitely the star of the show for us! There's room for two people in each carriage, making it perfect for parents and kids to ride together.

Affordable fun: One of the best things about Poplar Miniature Railway is how budget-friendly it is. Rides cost £2 each, or £1 if you're heading round again. If your little ones can't get enough (and let's face it, they probably won't), you can grab a £5 wristband for unlimited rides all day. Even better, kids under four ride free with a paying adult, which makes it great value.
More to explore: The railway is just one part of what makes Poplar Nurseries such a great spot for families. There's a lovely play area next to the railway with a slide and swings, as well as a cute bug hotel. The garden centre's restaurant is a great option if you're staying for lunch – with plenty of homemade cakes and child-friendly options on the menu. The garden centre itself has a huge selection of plants, ornaments and everything else in-between!

Our verdict: Poplar Miniature Railway is a brilliant little activity that little ones will be sure to love and it doesn't break the bank. It's just the right mix of simple fun and nostalgia – the kind of thing that leaves kids beaming and grown-ups a bit chuffed too. If you're local or passing through Colchester, it's definitely worth a visit.
