Buzz in the City art trail from 5th July to 9th September 2025

This summer, something very special is coming to Chelmsford… and it’s about to create quite the buzz.

From 5 July to 9 September, the city will be transformed into a vibrant open-air gallery filled with giant, artist-designed bee sculptures, forming an exciting Buzz in the City trail for families, residents and visitors to explore. With 30 bold and beautiful bees dotted around the city centre, along with a swarm of smaller “mini bees” decorated by local schools, care homes and community groups, there’s something for everyone to enjoy on this creative, feel-good adventure.

A free family day out with a difference

For parents and carers looking for free or low-cost ways to keep kids entertained over the summer holidays, Buzz in the City couldn’t come at a better time. The trail is completely free to explore, and because it’s all outdoors and self-guided, you can go at your own pace – whether that’s ticking off a few bees during a morning walk or spending the whole day uncovering as many as you can.

There’s no need to stick to one day, either. With the trail running throughout July, August and into early September, families can keep coming back to discover more bees – and maybe even revisit their favourites. Each sculpture is uniquely painted by talented artists, with bold colours, imaginative themes and eye-catching details that kids will love hunting for.

Start the trail and follow the buzz

You can pick up a printed trail map from local outlets or, for a more interactive experience, download the official Buzz in the City trail app. The app helps you locate each bee, track your progress, and even unlock rewards and prizes from trail sponsors as you go – a brilliant incentive for little legs to keep walking!

Whether you’re a Chelmsford local or visiting for the first time, this trail is also a fantastic way to explore the city. Some sculptures will be tucked in hidden corners or outside lesser-known landmarks, so it’s the perfect excuse to discover new spots and see familiar areas through fresh eyes.

The mini bees – made with love by the community

As well as the 30 large-scale bees, a collection of smaller mini bees will be displayed around the city, each one lovingly decorated by schools, care homes and community groups across Chelmsford and beyond. These mini bees are just as full of character as their giant counterparts – and spotting them adds an extra layer of joy to the trail.

For children who’ve taken part in decorating one of the bees, it’s a chance to see their own creativity become part of a wider celebration. For everyone else, it’s a lovely glimpse into the imagination and community spirit of local people.

More than just art – supporting Farleigh Hospice

While Buzz in the City is all about fun and discovery, it also has a deeper purpose. The trail is raising vital funds for Farleigh Hospice, which provides free, compassionate care and support for adults and children in mid Essex who are facing life-limiting illness, along with bereavement support for families.

Farleigh Hospice receives no payment for its services, and relies on events like this to continue its work. All of the giant bees will be auctioned at a special event at Channels Estate on 17 September, with proceeds going directly to the charity. So every photo taken, every bee spotted, and every footstep on the trail helps raise awareness and support for this much-loved local cause.

Who’s behind Buzz in the City?

Buzz in the City is organised by Farleigh Hospice in partnership with Chelmsford For You – the city’s Business Improvement District – and supported by Chelmsford City Council. The trail’s headline sponsors are Teledyne E2V and Fisher Jones Greenwood Solicitors, with additional support from local businesses, organisations and artists.

The sculptures themselves have been created by Making Trails, a specialist team known for producing public art trails across the UK. Their aim is to bring creativity into public spaces in a way that’s accessible, fun, and meaningful – and Chelmsford’s bees are no exception.

Why you should get involved

There’s something uniquely joyful about art trails like this. They spark curiosity, encourage movement, and give families a fun, screen-free way to connect. Whether you’re snapping photos of each bee, enjoying a sunny walk through town, or simply watching your children’s faces light up as they spot another sculpture, Buzz in the City is all about making memories.

It’s also a brilliant opportunity to talk about nature and the importance of bees – perfect for a bit of gentle learning along the way. With the added feel-good factor of supporting a local charity, this is the kind of event that brings people together and leaves a lasting impression.
