Freya Levy, a disability sports star and passionate advocate, will be sharing her incredible journey with her assistance dog, Mater, in an inspiring talk that you won’t want to miss. This event offers a unique opportunity to hear firsthand from Freya about how her assistance dog has transformed her life, enabling her to navigate challenges and achieve her dreams.

A Lifelong Journey of Overcoming Challenges

Diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy at just 14 years old, Freya’s life took a different turn when her early aspirations of playing rugby and football were abruptly halted. Muscular Dystrophy, a condition that gradually weakens the muscles, presented significant challenges to Freya’s physical abilities. However, rather than let these challenges define her, Freya found strength through sport. She quickly turned to alternative forms of exercise and rehabilitation, which eventually became a cornerstone of her life.

Despite her diagnosis, Freya went on to represent both England and Great Britain in four different sports, including athletics and wheelchair rugby. Her journey in sports has been nothing short of extraordinary, and she has even appeared as a BBC pundit during the Rugby League World Cup. Her story is a testament to the power of determination and the resilience of the human spirit.

Meet Mater, the Life-Changing Assistance Dog

In 2021, Freya partnered with Support Dogs, an organisation that trains and supports assistance dogs. It was through this partnership that Freya was introduced to Mater, a wonderful yellow Labrador who has since become an integral part of her daily life. Mater is not just a companion, but a reliable, intelligent, and skilled assistance dog who has been trained to support Freya in navigating the challenges brought on by her condition.

Assistance dogs like Mater provide much more than just physical support. They are trained to assist with everything from picking up dropped items to helping with mobility and offering comfort in difficult moments. For Freya, Mater represents a true partnership that empowers her to live independently and confidently, knowing she has a loyal companion by her side. Their bond is a powerful reminder of the life-changing impact that a well-trained assistance dog can have.

The Power of Human-Dog Partnerships

This talk will delve into the remarkable relationship between Freya and Mater, highlighting how this partnership has not only impacted Freya’s daily life but also her broader journey of self-empowerment and advocacy. The bond between humans and assistance dogs is one of loyalty, intelligence, and mutual respect. Mater’s role in Freya’s life extends beyond that of a mere service animal – he is her companion, her guide, and a symbol of resilience.

Freya’s story will inspire and educate attendees about the incredible potential of assistance dogs to change lives. Whether you’re someone who relies on an assistance dog or simply someone interested in learning more about the power of these remarkable animals, this talk promises to offer valuable insights into how these partnerships work and the profound impact they can have on individuals’ lives.
